Dr. Abdulfatah Abushagur is an experienced engineer and senior postdoctoral researcher with deep expertise in optical fiber sensing technologies, intelligent networks, and product-oriented research, currently affiliated with the Center for Fiber Networking and Communication, COE for Intelligent Network, Multimedia University, Malaysia. A. Abushagur has an extensive academic background in engineering and applied sciences, developed through long-term research appointments and advanced technical training in optical fiber systems, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology, distributed optical fiber sensing, and sensor-driven instrumentation, forming a strong foundation for both academic research and industrial commercialization. A. Abushagur has over two decades of full-time professional experience spanning academia and industry, including roles as Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at Multimedia University and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Research Officer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Senior Product and Research Engineer at Photronix Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd, where he led Fiber Bragg Grating and optical coupler production units, established new manufacturing lines, automated production using LabVIEW, increased sales revenue by 200%, reduced time-to-market by approximately 66%, and lowered production costs by more than 10%; his academic career includes leading high-impact projects such as the design of novel multi-sensory distributed optical fiber sensor cables for oil and gas wells, enhancement of DAS, DTS, DPS, and DMS fibers for subsurface imaging, temperature, pressure, magnetic sensing, and drilling direction, development of tri-axial distal force sensors for cardiac ablation catheters with demonstrated commercial value of RM12.00 million, and pioneering FBG-based force sensing systems for vitreoretinal microsurgery. A. Abushagur’s research interests include distributed optical fiber sensing, Fiber Bragg Grating sensors, oil and gas well monitoring, medical instrumentation, smart sensing systems, subsurface imaging, intelligent networks, and the translation of sensing technologies into market-ready products. His core research skills encompass optical fiber sensor design, FBG fabrication, DAS/DTS/DPS/DMS systems, sensor calibration, medical device prototyping, system integration, signal processing, LabVIEW-based automation, production scaling, quality control, and interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, healthcare, and energy sectors. A. Abushagur has received recognition through leadership of commercially valued research projects, successful technology transfer initiatives, Scopus-indexed research contributions, and trusted appointments in advanced research and teaching roles.
